FTB @ CMS- FIRST DUAL OF THE SEASON

Overall for FTB, our kids did well last night; although the final score doesn't look like it (51-22). We were up 12-3 after 5 light-wts & 22-21 after 5 mid-wts. JJ Laird set the tone for the eve's dual with a superb display of wrestling skill versus an equally skilled opponent in Dillon Werth. Laird's early takedown and gritty cradle gave him a first period 5-0 lead. He held off Werth to win the match 5-3. Logan Brown followed JJ's lead with a win. Carl McAninch fought hard but lost a tough match. Austin Kolikas rebounded and secured another decision for us, followed by Travis Gorham's win.

The middle weights increased in adversity as David McMillion fell in his first match.  Zach Miller gained a major decision in a high scoring match. While Coty Williams and Jake Davis both lost. Jorge Gonzalez wrestled very well to gain our only pinfall of the evening.

But give those kids from CMS their due, they rallied in the upper-wts and seized victory by pinfall. Our upper-wts were rambunctious but our haste resulted in errors that led to 5 straight pinfalls (Cameron Hatcher. Frankie Webster, Avery Rabb, De'Kwan Holmes & David Leavell).  And to think back, in a couple of those matches we were actually ahead!

In exhibition matches, Christian Herrera, Dylan Mongold and David Leavell all prevailed with pinfalls.  While Jensen Armstrong, Justin Illery, Trevone Holmes and Edwin Palomares had their first match end by fall.

But it's early in the season.  We have a lot of student-athletes wrestling for the very first time. So, it gives us coaches & parents great opportunity to teach our kids to recognize, adapt and overcome our errors.

This weekend we will have another opportunity.  I suspect many of our middle school wrestlers will face each other again this Saturday at the Warren County MS Wrestling Tournament. Hopefully all those matches will be for gold medals.

We plan to have a good spirited practice after school today.

Then we will see you all bright and early Saturday morn at 5:30-5:55AM. The bus leaves at 6:00 AM for our Warren County Tourny. Please pack a lunch & snacks or bring $5-10, as they will have food available/concessions. They also offer t-shirts for sale.

Good things come...

Sincerely,

FTB Wrestling Coach
Martin Shurina

CMS DUAL PREP

Parents & Wrestlers,

Tomorrow marks our first dual wrestling meet of this season.  We face our chief rival, Culpeper Middle School!

Dress sharp - khakis & collar shirts.  Have your wrestling gear & school work packed & ready.  You will be dismissed near the end of 4th block.  Report to the gym before departure.  You will need to have parents pick you up after our dual is over at CMS; the bus will not return us to FTB.

Parents & Blackhawk Faithful we would love to have you support and root on our Blackhawk Grapplers.  The Culpeper-Rivalry dual starts at 4:30pm.  There is a spectator fee for the wrestling dual (around $5).  Dual should end around 6-6:30pm.

Let's make all of Culpeper County, Virginia proud by displaying our wrestling skills, athleticism and sportsmanship!

GO BLACKHAWKS!

TEAM MEETING-TUES NOV 12, 5:30pm

Very pleased with our first practice today!  We just need to remember the four basic steps to become successful grapplers:  Train, Wrestle, Sleep, Repeat!

Team members received several important pieces of information regarding FTB Wrestling after practice today. Chief among the items were the picture forms, which take place tomorrow. Please dress neatly, khaki's or nice pants and a collar shirt. Also included was a school letter concerning the Sports Fee, $90, which is due Wednesday from 4:30-5:15pm paid directly to Mr. McCombs or Mrs. Settle.

A team letter, practice schedule, wrestling event schedule and general info rounded out the packet.

Lastly, we will have a brief team parent meeting after practice tomorrow to make sure everyone is up to speed and ready for this year's Blackhawks Wrestling Season.
